India Telecom 2010 to Begin Tomorrow
Fifth Edition of Exhibition to Focus on Broadband for All
“India Telecom 2010”, the fifth edition of the event, will begin tomorrow at New Delhi. Shri Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology(C&IT) will inaugurate the event in presence of Shri Gurudas Kamat and Shri Sachin Pilot, the Ministers of State for Communications & IT. Ms. Suvi Linden, the Minister of Communications, Finland who has come with a delegation to attend India Telecom 2010 will be the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India is organizing the event this year with the theme “Broadband for All” from December 9-11, 2010 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India in association with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)

The Indian Telecom Sector, one of the key drivers of the economy, has emerged as the fastest growing sector in the world and India has the second largest wireless network with over 723 million subscribers. The growth in this sector is contributing significantly to the economic growth of the country. It has attracted over US$ 10 billion of FDI in the country. Telecom sector has become an important tool for socio-economic development transforming India. This growth is the finest example of synergy of progressive Government policies and the competitive zeal of Indian Telecom industry.

India Telecom 2010 aims at promoting the opportunities in the Telecom sector for boosting country’s economic growth and attracting further FDI. The event will focus on the latest technologies, bringing together professionals from leading organizations looking for solutions for their current business activities. It will also provide an opportunity to deliberate upon the next wave of innovative ideas, especially Green Telecom, WiMAX technology, 3G & BWA proliferation in India, broadband expansion, number portability, Mobile Financial Services in India, Value Added Services, Telecom Infrastructure, etc.

Apart from the regular activities like previous editions, this edition of the India Telecom series will have several new features added to make it more fascinating as a business experience to the participants in all capacity.

Over 275 companies from over 37 countries are participating at this edition of India Telecom series. The event in particular has evoked a lot of interest from SAARC countries as it is an opportunity for them to interact with a vast range of telecom companies offering services of global standards at a single platform.

The India Telecom series was started in 2006 by DoT in association with various stakeholders with an aim to showcase the strength of Indian telecom sector and also to provide an effective platform for networking opportunities. The first three events have provided a gateway to telecom companies setting up their manufacturing base in India and an ideal platform for telecom professionals to exchange notes and seek business opportunities.

Inaugurated by the then President of India, the highlight of the first edition of the event was the CEO’s Roundtable with the then Minister for C&IT. At this interactive session “Vision 2010” -- a 10-Point Programme, at the CEO’s roundtable at India Telecom 2006 was unveiled. The 10 point charter focused on Network Expansion, Connecting the unconnected, Broadband coverage, Infrastructure Sharing, Third Generation mobile services, Introduction & spread of IPTV and Mobile TV & WiMAX, Manufacturing, R&D, International Bandwidth, Competition. The second and third editions of the event were inaugurated by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The theme of India Telecom 2007 was “Digital Divide to Digital Opportunities” and of India Telecom 2008 was “Connecting Rural India”. Inaugurating India Telecom 2008, the Prime Minister, launched the country’s first third generation (3G) mobile services in New Delhi. The fourth Edition of India Telecom series, India Telecom 2009 focused on “Telecom for Inclusive Growth”.
