Exhibition of Handicrafts of Jammu and Kashmir Opens at Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhawan
An exclusive exhibition of Handicrafts of Jammu & Kashmir “ Nayab” was inaugurated by Thiru Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare here today in the presence of Thiru Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister of Textiles, Tmt. Panabaaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Textiles. Tmt. Rita Menon , Secretary Textiles , Thiru Arshad Mir, President of Srinagar Exporters and Manufacturers Association , senior officials of the Ministry and artisans from the J& K were present on the occasion.

In his inaugural address, Thiru Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Kashmir’s handicrafts are unparallel with wide exclusivity in variety. He said the handicrafts of other two regions of J& K , Jammu and Ladakh are also requires to be promoted along with from the region of Kashmir. This sector requires helping hand for its promotion. For this , he said the initiative was taken for setting up of International Trade Centre at Srinagar , during his tenure as Chief Minister , needs to be pursued vigorously. Once establishes, the centre will provide platform to promote the crafts of the State at global level.

While addressing on the occasion, Thiru. Dayanidhi Maran said that Textiles Ministry has decided to upgrade the existing facilities by setting up a Carpet Mega Cluster at Srinagar with an investment of Rs 70 crore. Major thrust of the Textiles Ministry is to provide marketing support to the artisans, Thiru Maran added.

Tmt Panabaaka Lakshmi , in her address gave an overview of the various initiatives taken by the Textiles Ministry for the promotion and holistic development of handicrafts of the J & K. Tmt. Rita Menon , Textiles Secretary also in address gave the details of the various programmes initiated by the Ministry under special package for the J&K.

The Exhibition at Shilpi Haat, Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhawan will remain open till 18th December,2010.
