Setting up of National Elephant Conservation Authority
The Ministry is considering for setting up of the National Elephant Conservation Authority. The details are yet to be finalized. The population of wild elephants in the country as per the census done in the year 2007-08 is in the range of 27,669 to 27,719 as compared to a 26,413 estimated in previous census done in the year 2002. The population of elephant in the country is increasing not declining.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Shri Jairam Ramesh in a written reply to a question by Shri N K Singh in Rajya Sabha today.
