Union Ministry of Tourism in Collaboration of Jammu & Kashmir Government to Focus on Special Publicity and Branding of Ladakh Region
The Union Minister for Tourism and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja paid a two-day official visit to Leh-Ladakh from 10th November 2010 to review the Housing Rehabilitation project being executed by the Hindustan Prefab Ltd under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, with the support of various organisations including HUDCO. During the visit the minister also interacted with the affected people, school children, State, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and district officials. At Solar Colony, where maximum affected people are to be re-habilitated, 95 percent work undertaken by the organisations attached to the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation has been completed. The remaining work is expected to be completed in next ten days.

During the visit she travelled extensively within Leh and also went to a few tourist places around Leh and observed that infrastructure was never affected so much to be incapable of accommodating the foreign and domestic tourists. Whatever damage to the infrastructure had happened has been efficiently and quickly restored by the J&K government and the Local Administration with the support from the Government of India. The Minister observed that Leh and Ladakh is a safe and comfortable destination for all the tourists including international tourists. The Association of Tour Operators also met with the Minister at Leh and brought to her notice the fall in tourists coming to the city due to the adverse impression created that the infrastructure is not fully suited for tourists because of the recent cloud burst and flood.

The Minister assured the tour operators that Ministry of Tourism in collaboration of Jammu & Kashmir Government would focus on special publicity and branding of Ladakh Region. She also urged them to take advantage of the schemes of Market Development Assistance and Publicity Support for intensifying the efforts at the individual level also.
