Rail Wheel Factory
The production capacity of the Rail Wheel Factory (RWF), Bangalore, a Production Unit of Indian Railways, is being enhanced from the existing 95,000 wheel discs to 1,15,000 wheels discs and to 50,000 axles from the existing 46,000 axles.
Established in 1980 under a licence agreement with M/s Griffin Wheel Co., USA, the RWF has now developed a wide range of wheels for locomotives, coaches and wagons both for broad gauge and metre gauge. It was started as a part of import substitution and conservation of foreign exchange by the Indian Railways.
The RWF has undertaken development and manufacture of various types of wheels. These include 840 milimetre dia wheel for flat wagons for carrying 150 containers, 915 milimetre dia wheel for broad gauge coaching stock, 725 milimetre dia wheel for metre gauge coaching stock and 1,092 milimetre dia wheel for broad gauge locomotives.
The RWF has also developed and manufactured 29 types of axles for use on diesel, Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) coaches and crane application for overseas customers.
The RWF is the first Production Unit of the Indian Railways to obtain ISO 9000 Certification and also ISO 14001 for Environmental Management System Standards.
It has also exported 1098 wheels and 200 axles to the USA.
