The Indian Coast Guard has been
suitably equipped to protect the maritime and other national interests in the
maritime zones of India. Further, acquisition of new equipment, aircraft,
boats and ships for Coast Guard is an ongoing process as per the threat
perceptions.
Presently, there is no proposal for
setting-up more Coast Guard Stations. However, several measures to strengthen
coastal security which include improving surveillance mechanism by installation
of radars covering the country’s coastline / islands and enhanced patrolling by
security agencies following an integrated approach. Joint operational
exercises are conducted on regular basis among Navy, Coast Guard, Coastal
Police, Customs and others. Intelligence mechanism has also been streamlined
through the creation of Joint Operation Centres and multi-agency coordination
mechanism. Additionally, Indian Coast Guard is also organising Community
Interaction Programmes (CIP) for the fishermen to bring awareness amongst
fisher folk for strengthening coastal security mechanism.
