National Centre for Seismology
National Centre for Seismology (NCS) has come into being in August 2014 and the process of capacity building for it has just been initiated
Following are the specific targets and deliverables set by
(i) Upgradation of existing seismic stations with broad band seismographs and VSAT at 30 selected locations to enable detection of smaller earthquakes. Required equipments have been procured and are to be installed after testing.
(ii) Initiation of microzonation of 30 selected cities of the country. RFP to be floated and geological maps will be acquired during 2015-16.
The following research projects are currently under way:-
(i) Upgadation of seismic monitoring network with a total outlay of Rs.25.17 crores.
(ii) Microzonation of 30 cities with a financial outlay of 6 crore for the FY 2015-16.
(iii) In-house research on various seismological aspects, e.g., GPS, Active Fault mapping, Seismic wave analysis, tomography, earthquake precursory studies, etc.
This was stated by Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth Science Shri Y.S. Chowdary in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question today.
