Census 2011 Data on Marital Status & Fertility & Head of Household Released

The Office of the Registrar General, India has recently released the following tables of Census 2011:

-         Marital Status by Age and Sex (Table C-2)

-         Ever married and currently Married Population by Age at Marriage and duration of Marriage (Table C-4)

-         Number of women and Ever married women by present Age and Parity and Total Children Ever born by Sex (Table F-1)

-         Number of women and Ever married women by present Age, Number of surviving Children and Total Surviving Children by Sex (Table F-5)

-         Number of women and Currently Married women by present Age, Number of births last year by Sex and Birth Order (Table F-9)

Tables on Marital Status and Age at Marriage:

From the data released on marital status, it is observed that, at the national level, the proportion of currently married women to total number of women is reported to be 49.9% in Census 2011 as against 47.7% in Census 2001. In case of males it is 46.0% in Census 2011 as against 43.6% in Census 2001. Proportion of Widowed has increased from 6.4 % in Census 2001 to 7.4 % in Census 2011 for females and in males it is increased from 1.8% to 2.0%.

Proportion of Divorced/Separated has marginally increased in both the sexes. The table on Age at marriage provides data on Mean age at marriage, derivative value from ever married and currently married population by Age at Marriage and duration of Marriage. It is observed that the female mean age at marriage has increased from 18.3 to 19.3 years, whereas the increase in male is from 22.6 to 23.3 during Census 2001-11.

Tables on Fertility:

From the tables on Fertility it is observed that sex ratio of children ever born in 2011 has declined for all age groups as compared to 2001. However, the decline is more in the younger age groups especially below 20. There is an improvement in survival ratio and there is an upward shift for all age groups during Census 2001-11. The Age Specific Fertility Rate at National level for women in age group 15-49 in five-year age groups has declined in 2011 as compared to 2001. The Total Fertility Rate at National level has declined from 2.5 to 2.2 during 2001-11.

Households by marital status, sex and age of the head of household:

This table presents the data for marital status of the head of household by age and sex in nine age groups. The marital status has been shown by the status of never married, currently married, widowed, separated, divorced and unspecified. This data is presented at India/ State/ District and City level for total rural and urban. The age groups presented are less than 20, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+ and age not stated.
