Since Health is a State subject, the information regarding State/UTs-wise requirement of beds in urban and rural areas, is not maintained centrally. It is the responsibility of the State Governments to make efforts to provide adequate healthcare facilities to the people. Central Government supplements their efforts by way of providing assistance to the State Governments through various Schemes/Programmes such as National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), etc. A statement showing State Programme Implementation Plan (SPIP) approval and expenditure incurred for hospital strengthening, new constructions/ renovation and setting up of health centres during 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 is given below:

100/50/30 bedded Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Wings have been sanctioned in 470 Public Health facilities with high bed occupancy in past three years. These would create 28,500 additional beds in these health facilities across 18 states.

Government is also presently setting up 7 AIIMS with 960 beds each and has also taken up up-gradation of 13 medical colleges in first phase; 6 medical colleges in second Phase; and 39 medical colleges in third Phase under PMSSY.

In so far as three central Government Hospitals located in Delhi namely Safdarjung Hospitals, Dr. RML Hospital and Lady Harding Medical College and associated hospitals (LHMC) are concerned, increase in beds by way of creation of new infrastructure or up-grading existing infrastructure is a continuous process and taken in accordance with requirement and availability of funds. In recent past, Government has proved redevelopment plan of LHMC and Safdarjung Hospital, which, on completion, will add 570 and 1307 additional beds.

The Health Minister stated this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha here today.
