Disposal of Medical Waste

The Bio-medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998, as amended, have been notified for management of bio-medical waste in the country. The repackaging and sale of used medical equipment i.e. syringes, needles, saline bottles, vials, etc. is not permitted under these Rules. The responsibility for implementation of these rules lies with State Pollution Control Board or Pollution control Committees.

However, as far as three Central Government Hospitals located in Delhi namely Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. RML Hospital and LHMC & associated Hospitals are concerned, no such incident has come to the notice. In these Hospitals, auto disposable syringes are being used. All the disposable items are being disposed of as per the Bio-medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 1998, as amended.

The Health Minister stated this in a written reply in the LokSabha here today.
