Indian Army and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Darjeeling Mountaineers summit Mt. Jongsong (7462 mtrs), break barriers of 90 years

Kolkata; December 12, 2022

 

Indian Army and HMI Darjeeling in joint expedition led by Group Captain Jaikishan (Principal, HMI) broke the barriers of 90 years. A unique tryst, indomitable spirited mountaineers and Shepra from Darjeeling successfully summited Mt Jongsong (7462 Mtrs) and Domekhang (7264 Mtrs) within a span of 24 hours (two 7000 Mtrs peak, with a span of 24 hrs). The expedition was flagged off by the Governor of Sikkim, Shri Ganga Prasad on August 25, 2022 in the presence of Chief Minister of Sikkim and GOC 33 Corps and other officials as Part of Eastern Command Trans Theatre Adventure Activities-2022.

The expedition team comprised of 24 Mountaineers including four civil Mountaineers (02 Women climbers) led by Group Captain Jai Kishan, Principal HMI Darjeeling.

Since its first summit in 1930, and second in 2012 by Himalayan Club, Kolkata, Mt Jongsong, the world's highest tri junction point between India and China is considered one amongst the most technically difficult mountain summit because of its approach, frequent avalanches hazardous cornice near to summit, rock falls and treacherous terrain.

Considering the inherent risk in Climbing Mt. Jongsong and the parrel rescue mission undertaken by the team, the team members received various felicitations as mentioned below;

(i) Felicitation and Flag In ceremony at Dolma Sampa (14600 feet

On September 29, 2022, the 7500 sq.ft. National Flag, which was travelling from various parts of country to Antarctica was finally displayed at Dolma Sampa (14,600 ft,  in the close vicinity of China border) and the expedition leader Group Capt.  Jai Kishan presented the Ice Axe and Expedition Flag  to GOC, 33 Corps and GOC, 27 Mtn Div in presence of various officials and dignitaries.

(ii) Felicitation by Chief of Army Staff The Chief of Army Staff interacted with Expedition team on October 24, 2022 at Sukna Military Station.

(iii) Felicitation by HMI, Ministry of Defence  25 Nov 2022 As the  expedition was led by Principal ,HMI a grand felicitation  was organized by HMI wherein Certificates, expedition trophies  and cash prize were presented to climber and Sherpa.

The ceremony was attended by GOC 27 Mtn Div and other senior officials from  Indian Army.

(iv) Felicitation by Sh.Chowna Mein, Deputy Chief Minister, Arunachal Pradesh on December 07, 2022, at Golden Pagoda Namsai
