National Science Day (NSD) 2022 was celebrated on the theme, “Integrated Approach in S&T for Sustainable Future” at a function organized at Vigyan Bhawan on 28 Feb 2022. The theme of NSD 2022 was chosen for the purpose of raising public appreciation and awareness of various scientific issues related to sustainable future. The NSD Theme lecture was delivered by Dr Anurag Agrawal, Director, CSIR-IGIB, Delhi. Awards were given on the National Science Day to individuals/ institutions for their work related to S&T Communication & Popularization, and Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) Awards. National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) of DST is the nodal agency to support, catalyze and coordinate celebration of the NSD throughout the country, particularly in scientific institutions & research laboratories. Various programmes were supported countrywide by giving grants to State S&T Councils & Departments for organization of lectures, quizzes, open houses, in hybrid mode, etc. towards commemoration of NSD.
The National Science Week on the theme ‘Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate’, culminating on National Science Day, was organized as part of the ‘Amrit Mahotsav Science Showcase: Roadmap to 2047’, by various scientific Ministries/Departments like the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Revolution (CSIR), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Department of Space (DOS), Department of Health Research (DHR) and Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and coordinated by Vigyan Prasar under the aegis of the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, along with the Ministry of Culture.
Science exhibitions with models, book fairs, lectures, competitions, science literature festivals, etc. were organised in collaboration with local academic partners at 75 locations across the country namely at Agartala, Agra, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Amritsar, Aurangabad, Bengaluru, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Burdwan, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Daman, Darbhanga, Dehradun, Dhanbad, Durgapur, Gangtok, Gorakhpur, Gulbarga, Guwahati, Haridwar, Hissar, Hyderabad, Indore, Itanagar, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jalpaiguri, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kavaratti, Kohima, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Kurukshetra, Leh, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Madurai, Mangalore, Medinipur, Meerut, Mumbai, Mysuru, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patiala, Patna, Port Blair, Prayagraj, Puducherry, Pune, Purulia, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Shrinagar, Siliguri, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Tirunelveli, Tirupati, Trichy, Udaipur, Vadodara, Varanasi, Vijaywada, Vishakhapatnam, Warangal. At New Delhi, a mega exposition was arranged along with a national science book fair associated with the National Book Trust and Federation of Indian Publishers. A grand inaugural function and finale were organised at Vigyan Bhavan on February 22 and 28, 2022, respectively. It is estimated that about 2 million people directly visited and took part in the events across the country and many more through hybrid mode.
