WATER TESTING LABORATORIES

To make provision of potable tap water supply in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality and on regular & long-term basis to every rural household by 2024, since August, 2019, Government of India in partnership with States, is implementing JalJeevan Mission (JJM) – HarGharJal.

            Under JJM, States/ UTs can utilize upto 2% of their annual allocation for taking up water quality monitoring & surveillance activities. States/ UTs have been advised to upgrade different levels of laboratories i.e. State, district, sub-division and/ or block level and get NABL accreditation and/ or recognition. As reported by States/ UTs, State-wise number of various level drinking water quality testing laboratories set up in the country as on 13.12.2021, is annexed. States/ UTs have been advised to open these water quality laboratories to general public so that they can get their water samples tested on nominal  rates.

                   Drinking Water being a State subject, it is States who plan, design, approve and implement drinking water supply schemes including setting up of labs. As such individual projects/ schemes for rural water supply are not approved at the Government of India level.

            This Information was given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, ShriPrahlad Singh Patel in a written  reply in Lok Sabha today.
