Tandur Redgram: Telangana's Unique GI-Tagged Agricultural Product

Tandur Redgram is the first agricultural product from Telangana to receive Geographical Indication (GI) registration. It is primarily cultivated in the rainfed tracts of four mandals in the Tandur region namely Tandur, Basheerabad, Peddemul and Yelal. The distinctive characteristics of Tandur Redgram are associated with the region's fertile deep black soils, the presence of attapulgite clay mineral deposits, and substantial limestone deposits.

Tandur Redgram contains approximately 22–24% protein, nearly three times the protein content of cereals. It is valued for its excellent taste, superior cooking quality, and enhanced keeping quality. Its GI identity offers an opportunity to strengthen product recognition, improve market visibility, and generate greater value through access to domestic and international markets.

The export shipment to Australia represents a significant step towards exploring new overseas markets for this distinctive agricultural product and expanding opportunities for farmers, producers, and exporters.

APEDA's Guidance and Support for Promoting GI-Tagged Products

APEDA has been actively supporting the promotion of India's Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged agricultural products in international markets by facilitating export linkages, encouraging exporter participation in trade fairs, and providing guidance on export opportunities and market access. Through its export promotion initiatives, APEDA aims to enhance the global visibility of India's unique regional agricultural products and create sustainable market opportunities for farmers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), and exporters.

The initiative is expected to encourage further exploration of international markets for GI-tagged agricultural products and other unique agricultural commodities from Telangana. It is also expected to strengthen export opportunities for farmers, exporters, and other stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.

Through continued engagement with exporters and stakeholders, APEDA remains committed to enhancing the global presence of India's agricultural products, creating new export opportunities, and taking India's rich agricultural heritage to international markets.
