The National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme provides eligible scholars with financial assistance to pursue doctoral studies and work towards their academic goals. For many aspiring researchers, financial constraints can make the pursuit of higher education difficult.
The journey of Dr. Chetana Regar from Rajsamand district of Rajasthan illustrates the role such support can play in making higher education possible.
Dr. Chetana Regar, 32, aspired to pursue advanced studies and build a career in academia. However, the financial burden associated with higher education, along with family pressure, made it challenging to pursue her ambitions. She also recognised that doctoral qualifications and research experience may not always receive adequate recognition in the private sector, creating additional uncertainty about professional opportunities.

Her NFSC fellowship assistance began in November 2020 and included fellowship support, House Rent Allowance (HRA) and contingency assistance. The support helped her continue her Ph.D. studies and eased the financial barriers associated with doctoral education. Dr. Regar has stated that pursuing a Ph.D. would not have been possible for her without the fellowship.
The assistance also contributed to a positive personal change: Dr. Regar reported becoming more confident. This confidence has supported her continued commitment to her academic and professional aspirations.
Dr. Regar is currently preparing for Assistant Professor opportunities. Her journey highlights how fellowship support can help eligible scholars pursue doctoral education, build confidence and work towards careers in teaching and research.
