BIS Eastern Regional Office Celebrates Manak Mahotsav 2026 with Focus on Standards for Clean Energy
World Standards Day celebration highlights role of standards in achieving SDGs

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Eastern Regional Office, Kolkata, celebrated Manak Mahotsav 2026 on the occasion of World Standards Day in Kolkata today. The celebration was organised on the theme “Shared Vision for a Better World – Standards for SDGs”, with a special focus on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy.
Shri Tapas Roy, Minister-in-Charge, Department of Industry, Commerce & Enterprises; Public Enterprises & Industrial Reconstruction; and Non-Conventional & Renewable Energy Sources, Government of West Bengal; Professor S. P. Gon Chaudhuri, renowned energy expert and Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General, Eastern Region, BIS attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Roy and Professor Chaidhuri highlighted the importance of Indian Standards in promoting quality, reliability and safety in the energy sector and in supporting the transition towards affordable, clean and sustainable energy.
As part of the celebration, BIS felicitated industries and laboratories for their outstanding contribution to the standardization and quality ecosystem.
A technical session was organised with participation from experts representing Exide Industries, Schneider Electric, N. B. Institute of Rural Technology (NBIRT) and the field of climate change. The session deliberated on energy storage, clean energy transition, climate change and sustainable practices, highlighting the role of standards in facilitating a resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem.
The event also showcased various consumer-centric initiatives of BIS, including the BIS CARE App, which has crossed one crore downloads. The app enables consumers to verify BIS licences and Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) numbers, lodge complaints and locate BIS-recognized laboratories.
The celebration brought together stakeholders from industry, laboratories, academia and government departments, reaffirming the collective commitment towards quality, sustainability and effective implementation of standards. The event highlighted the crucial role of standardization in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and building a safer, more sustainable and resilient future.
