The Army leg of the Defence Correspondents Course 2026 commenced at Tezpur with an address by the Corps Commander, setting the context for participants’ engagement with the Indian Army and their understanding of military affairs.

The inaugural address was followed by a welcome address by the Deputy General Officer Commanding, 5 Mountain Division. An orientation briefing by Colonel General Staff familiarised the defence correspondents with the programme, its training objectives and the broad framework of the Army leg.
A session on the 1962 operations provided participants with historical context and an appreciation of the challenges of mountain warfare. The discussion offered insights into operational lessons and the importance of understanding terrain, logistics and the circumstances surrounding military decisions when examining past campaigns.

Participants were subsequently briefed on the dos and don’ts for media personnel during military operations. The session emphasised operational security, verification of information, adherence to authorised reporting procedures and responsible handling of sensitive details. Particular attention was accorded to balancing timely reporting with the safety of troops and the integrity of ongoing operations.
The opening programme laid the foundation for informed interaction between the Army and defence correspondents, strengthening professional understanding and encouraging accurate, balanced and responsible coverage.
