​On the concluding day of their comprehensive tour of Assam, the media delegation from Odisha, led by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Bhubaneswar, visited the expansive petrochemical complex of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) at Lepetkata in Dibrugarh district. The immersive engagement provided journalists firsthand perspectives on Northeast India's premier industrial set up, its cutting-edge hydrocarbon processing technology, and its pivotal socio-economic footprint across Eastern India.

During the comprehensive visit, BCPL officials presented an exposition of the enterprise's genesis, operational milestones, and strategic trajectory. Conceived under the historic Assam Accord of 1985 to spearhead equitable regional industrialization, BCPL stands as an exemplary joint venture anchored by GAIL (India) Limited (70% equity stake), in synergistic collaboration with Oil India Limited (OIL), Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), and the Government of Assam, functioning under the administrative stewardship of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG).

The visiting delegation learnt about the seamless conversion of natural gas and naphtha feedstock into premium polymer granules, underscoring BCPL's benchmark standards in industrial safety, environmental safeguards, and digital quality monitoring.

Exemplifying operational rigor, BCPL has achieved an outstanding 106% capacity utilization in FY 2025–26, maintaining an average operational tempo exceeding 100% over the past five financial years despite volatile supply logistics. Financed on robust fundamentals and timely policy interventions by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), the company recorded a handsome net profit of ₹117.67 crore in FY 2025–26, propelling its net worth to ₹3,138.28 crore—more than twice its paid-up equity base of ₹1,418 crore.

Marketed nationwide by GAIL through 35 strategically positioned consignment stockists, BCPL commands an undisputed leadership in the North-Eastern Region (NER), which absorbs 16% of total polymer output—while efficiently supplying manufacturing hubs across Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and southern industrial corridors. Bolstering regional trade ties under India's Act East paradigm, the company regularly exports polymer consignments to Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Beyond engineering excellence, BCPL operates as a formidable socio-economic catalyst. The enterprise has spawned approximately 47,788 direct and indirect livelihood opportunities throughout its auxiliary supply and transport matrices, while sustaining 620 permanent technocrats and 2,600 contractual personnel. Rigorous independent studies reflect that the plant accounts for roughly 0.23% of Assam’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth. Concurrently, impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) interventions have touched 23,240 beneficiaries, fostering localized skill development and creating 1,692 self-sustaining vocations.

Briefing the media on forward-looking initiatives, officials unveiled progress on strategic brownfield ventures valued at ₹817.92 crore—comprising a dedicated 10 KTPA Butene-1 unit to eliminate external chemical dependency and a 54 KTPA 2nd Stage Hydrogenation of Pyrolysis Gasoline (HPG) facility for high-value fuel blending. Slated for commissioning in FY 2026–27 alongside a phased Net Zero decarbonization roadmap, BCPL continues to redefine the frontiers of energy transition, indigenous self-sufficiency, and shared economic prosperity.
