The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, organised a ‘Manak Manthan’ programme today to discuss the Draft Indian Standard EED 05 (34110) WC on “Greenbelt Development and Management — Guidelines for Service Providers for Industrial Projects.” The session brought together industry stakeholders, technical experts, and service providers to share inputs on scientific planning, plantation design, and environmental management for industrial projects.

 

Delivering the welcome address, Shri S.D. Dayanand, Scientist-F and Head of BIS Chennai Branch Office, highlighted the role of stakeholder feedback in standardisation. He emphasised that the draft standard prioritises native, perennial, and pollution-tolerant species over invasive plants, recommending a stratified planting approach to maximise environmental benefits.

A detailed technical presentation was conducted virtually by Dr. Pankaj Srivastava, Scientist-G, CSIR–NBRI, Lucknow, covering key provisions such as phased five-year development plans, tiered plantation, digital geo-tagged monitoring, and survival audits. Shri Nandan Kumar, Scientist-B, facilitated the discussion, assuring participants that stakeholder suggestions would be submitted to the technical committee. Shri Pakki Balu, Scientist-C, also provided an overview of digital initiatives, including the BIS CARE App, before the event concluded with an open house session.
