Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Shri T. K. Anil Kumar inaugurated the ULLAS Mela in New Delhi today. Speaking on the occasion, he said that ULLAS Mela provided an opportunity to see, share and learn from each other's journeys. He dedicated ULLAS Mela to all the participating learners, volunteer teachers and States/UTs, acknowledging their collective contribution towards strengthening the literacy movement across the country.

While appreciating the colourful, vibrant exhibition stalls that reflected the cultural richness, and diversity, the Secretary urged the States/UTs with full functional literacy to take the lead in the next phase of ULLAS. He emphasised that the journey must be sustained through continued learning, strengthening of literacy and ensuring that the benefits of education reached the last mile. Calling upon the younger generation to become active partners in the literacy movement, he urged youth to participate in the literacy campaign as a civic duty and maximise its reach through social media and other digital platforms.

Addressing the gathering, Director, NCERT, Prof. Dinesh Prasad Saklani described ULLAS as a window of opportunity through which non-literate individuals can enter the journey of learning. He stressed on the growing importance of financial, legal, digital and electoral literacy in enabling citizens to understand their rights, responsibilities and the needs of modern times. He suggested that a new credit and incentive architecture may be designed to enable students to earn credit points by helping others acquire literacy.

Exhibition stalls were set up by 28 participating States/UTs, NCERT, NCTE and NIOS to showcase their achievements, best practices, learning materials and innovative methods with special emphasis on the accomplishments of fully literate States/UTs.

The two day long International Literacy Day celebrations concluded with the ULLAS Mela comprising various activities including cultural performances and panel discussions.
