The Office of the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Patna, under the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Ministry of Labour & Employment, has undertaken a special drive for the expeditious disposal of long-pending gratuity cases under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.

As part of this drive, 25 applications filed by workers engaged in the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Patna were taken up for hearing and decided by the Controlling Authority under the Act, namely the Assistant Labour Commissioner (Central), Patna. All 25 cases were disposed of in favour of the workers, extending statutory gratuity benefits amounting to ₹16,40,193/- (Rupees Sixteen Lakh Forty Thousand One Hundred Ninety Three only).

In furtherance of the drive, a camp hearing was convened at the premises of IIT Patna, which was attended by the Registrar, IIT Patna. During the sitting, the establishment was sensitised on the mandatory requirements of the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, with emphasis on timely determination and payment of gratuity, proper maintenance of statutory records, and the obligations cast upon the principal employer in respect of workers engaged through contractors.

Consequent upon the orders passed, the management of IIT Patna took prompt and effective measures for compliance. The entire admissible gratuity, along with the statutory interest payable under the Act, has since been disbursed directly into the bank accounts of the concerned workers, ensuring that the benefit reached the intended beneficiaries without any intermediary deduction or delay.

The initiative reflects the continued commitment of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) organisation to the timely adjudication of workers' claims and to the protection of the statutory rights of the workforce, particularly contract workers engaged in establishments falling within the central sphere.
