Posted On: 02 SEP 2026 6:45PM by PIB Delhi

For scholars from financially constrained families, pursuing advanced education and research can be difficult without dependable financial support. Timely fellowship assistance can ease this burden and enable scholars to continue their academic journey with greater stability and confidence.

Demonstrating the impact of support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme, Shri Kuri Sravan Kumar, a 37-year-old research scholar from Bhadradri Kothagudem district in Telangana, overcame financial difficulties and family pressure to continue pursuing his Ph.D.

Before receiving assistance under the NFSC Scheme, Sravan Kumar faced educational and economic barriers. His father had retired and the family was experiencing financial problems, making it difficult for him to pursue his passion for research and higher studies without a dependable source of support.

Despite these constraints, Sravan Kumar remained committed to his academic goals. His selection for the NFSC fellowship proved to be a crucial turning point and enabled him to continue his doctoral research.

Sravan Kumar began receiving assistance under the NFSC Scheme in April 2023. The support included fellowship and contingency assistance.

The fellowship provided consistent financial support, reduced his economic stress and enabled him to continue his academic and research activities with greater focus.

The assistance also expanded his academic opportunities. With support under the Scheme, Sravan Kumar travelled to South Korea to participate in an international conference and present his research before an international academic audience. He also undertook fieldwork that contributed significantly to his research and proved valuable during the writing of his doctoral thesis.

After receiving the fellowship, Sravan Kumar published research papers in UGC CARE-listed journals and presented papers at academic forums in India and South Korea. These experiences strengthened his research capabilities and supported his development as a scholar.

Currently pursuing his Ph.D., Sravan Kumar continues to work towards his academic goals with greater confidence and stability. Although no change in income was reported, the fellowship addressed the financial challenges that had affected the continuation of his research.

Sravan Kumar's journey demonstrates how timely fellowship assistance can help scholars overcome economic barriers, gain international academic exposure and pursue their passion for research without abandoning their higher-education aspirations.
