3rd State Level Committee Meeting on Quality Systems and Hallmarking Held in Assam

Government of Assam and BIS discuss measures to strengthen quality ecosystem and hallmarking activities in the State

The 3rd Meeting of the State Level Committee (SLC) on Quality Systems and Hallmarking Activities for Assam was held on 29 August 2026 under the chairmanship of Dr. Ravi Kota, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Assam.

 

The meeting convened by the Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department, Government of Assam discussed measures to strengthen the quality ecosystem in the State, including wider adoption of Indian Standards by Government departments, strengthening of quality infrastructure, hallmarking, consumer awareness and effective implementation of Quality Control Orders (QCOs).

A major focus was on strengthening quality infrastructure in the North-Eastern Region, including augmentation of BIS laboratory facilities at Guwahati and establishment of a Referral Assay Laboratory for gold and silver jewellery and artefacts. The meeting also highlighted grassroots initiatives such as Student Clubs on Quality and Safety and the SHINE initiative – Standards Help Inform & Nurture Empowered Women, aimed at promoting quality and standards awareness among students, women and communities across the State.

Representing the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G & DDG, and senior officers of BIS Guwahati Branch Office and Guwahati Branch Laboratory participated in the deliberations. Senior officers from Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department; Legal Metrology Department; Industries & Commerce Department; Public Health Engineering Department; Public Works Department of Government of Assam and other stakeholder organisations also participated.
