The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore achieved a significant milestone in fisheries research and innovation with the grant of Indian Patent No. 600617 on August 27, 2026, for the invention entitled “A Process for Nanoemulsifiable Concentrate Formulations of Hydrophobic Bioactive Molecules.”
The patented technology represents an important advancement in the formulation of hydrophobic bioactive molecules and has been successfully translated into CIFRI ARGCURE®, an innovative product developed for the management of Argulus and other fish ectoparasites, which poses significant challenges to fish health and aquaculture productivity.
The patent marks an important achievement in fisheries innovation, intellectual property protection and technology commercialisation, particularly as the underlying research has already progressed from laboratory development to commercial application. CIFRI ARGCURE® has been commercialised twice on a non-exclusive basis through Agrinnovate India Ltd. The grant of the patent provides robust intellectual property protection to the technology and further strengthens ICAR-CIFRI’s intellectual property portfolio.
Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, said that the patent represents not merely recognition of scientific ingenuity but also demonstrates the Institute’s ability to translate research into practical solutions for real-world challenges in fisheries and aquaculture.
“The grant of Patent No. 600617 is a proud moment for ICAR-CIFRI and a reflection of our commitment to taking research beyond the laboratory. The successful commercialisation of CIFRI ARGCURE® demonstrates that scientific innovation aligned with the needs of the fisheries sector can lead to technologies with meaningful field and commercial potential,” Dr. Dey said.
He further emphasised that ICAR-CIFRI would continue to encourage research that generates intellectual property, facilitates technology transfer and contributes to the productivity, sustainability and profitability of fisheries and aquaculture systems.
Congratulating the scientists and technical team involved in the achievement, Dr. Dey underscored the importance of strengthening linkages among research institutions, industry and end users to accelerate the adoption of indigenous technologies and ensure that scientific innovations translate into tangible benefits for the fisheries sector.
The development and commercialisation of CIFRI ARGCURE® exemplify ICAR-CIFRI’s efforts to bridge the gap between scientific research and field-level application. The patent achievement also recognises the dedicated contributions of the inventors, scientists, technical personnel and other team members involved in the conceptualisation, development, validation and commercialisation of the technology.
With the grant of Indian Patent No. 600617, ICAR-CIFRI has further reinforced its commitment to scientific excellence, intellectual property generation, technology transfer and commercialisation, strengthening its contribution towards building a sustainable, productive and resilient fisheries and aquaculture sector.
