For scholars from financially constrained families, limited educational resources and restricted access to career opportunities can create significant barriers to pursuing higher education. Timely fellowship support can enable scholars to continue their academic journey with greater confidence and focus.
Demonstrating the impact of support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme, Shubhankar Ghorai, a 31-year-old scholar from Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, overcame financial constraints and limited resources to successfully complete his Ph.D.
Before receiving assistance under the NFSC Scheme, Shubhankar faced financial difficulties and limited access to educational resources. These constraints affected his academic progress and made it challenging for him to pursue better educational opportunities and professional development.
His family also faced financial difficulties and had limited resources for his education and career development. Economic constraints, along with a lack of career opportunities, affected his academic and professional growth.
Despite these challenges, Shubhankar aspired to complete higher education, improve his research skills and secure a good professional position. He also wanted to support his family and contribute to society through his work.
Shubhankar began receiving assistance under the NFSC Scheme in February 2020 that proved turning point for him. The support included a fellowship, House Rent Allowance (HRA) and contingency assistance.
The financial assistance helped him continue his research work, manage academic expenses and focus on achieving his academic and career goals without a major financial burden. It reduced the financial stress associated with pursuing advanced research.
With greater financial security, Shubhankar was able to continue his Ph.D. research smoothly that improved his academic progress and enabled him to devote greater attention to developing his research skills.

The fellowship also gave him confidence and strengthened his professional opportunities for future career growth. It enabled him to pursue his academic goals while working towards a more secure professional future.
Shubhankar has now completed his Ph.D. His achievement reflects how sustained fellowship assistance can help scholars overcome economic pressures and continue higher education without compromising their academic aspirations.
The NFSC Scheme not only reduced the financial burden during his Ph.D. journey but also supported his academic and personal development. The assistance helped transform a difficult journey marked by limited resources into one of confidence, progress and achievement.
Shubhankar Ghorai’s journey demonstrates how inclusive educational support can enable scholars from financially constrained backgrounds to overcome barriers. His experience highlights the importance of fellowship assistance in expanding access to higher education and strengthening research capabilities.
Through determination and timely support under the NFSC Scheme, Shubhankar progressed from facing financial difficulties and limited educational resources to successfully completing his Ph.D. His journey stands as an example of how educational empowerment can create meaningful academic, professional and personal change.
