Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla today congratulated the Maheshwari Samaj, Jaipur, on embarking upon a new and significant chapter in its enduring journey of service to humanity through the establishment of the Maheshwari Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. Addressing the foundation-laying ceremony of the Institute, he observed that the Maheshwari Samaj has a glorious and deeply inspiring legacy of service, sacrifice, dedication and social responsibility — a legacy that has illuminated society and inspired generations.
Recalling the community's historic contribution to the spread of education, Shri Birla noted that as early as 1926, when India was still under British rule and educational opportunities were scarce in both towns and villages, farsighted members of the Maheshwari Samaj had already recognised education as the cornerstone of an enlightened, cultured and progressive society. At a time when resources were limited and challenges were formidable, they came forward with remarkable commitment, pooling their resources and energies to establish schools and institutions of learning.
Shri Birla further stated that the Maheshwari Samaj also made a meaningful contribution to India's freedom movement and carried forward the immortal spirit of sacrifice and patriotism associated with the revered Bhamashah. Even in the most challenging circumstances, the community remained steadfast in its commitment to public service — establishing schools where educational facilities were absent and building dharamshalas to provide shelter and comfort to travellers arriving from distant places.
Lok Sabha Speaker added that the community's spirit of service was never confined to a single sphere. From schools and educational institutions to hospitals, dispensaries, community centres, hostels and scholarships, the Maheshwari Samaj has consistently sought to identify the needs and challenges confronting society and has worked collectively and compassionately to address them.
Referring to the unprecedented challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Shri Birla recalled that India drew immense strength from its collective social consciousness and its age-old tradition of caring for one another. He said that the spirit of collective responsibility, compassion and the timeless Indian ideal of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” - the world is one family - gives society the moral strength and resilience to overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
Emphasising that nation-building is a collective endeavour, Shri Birla emphasized that the responsibility of building a strong, prosperous and compassionate India cannot rest with the government alone. Citizens, voluntary organisations and social institutions, he said, have an equally important role in this national mission. Contribution to society and the nation need not always be measured in financial terms; it can also take the form of hard work, dedication, professional skills, knowledge and selfless service.
Highlighting the importance of the new medical institution, Shri Birla said that quality medical education, research, innovation and healthcare have acquired even greater significance in the present times. He stressed that the benefits of modern and quality healthcare must reach every section of society, particularly those living in remote villages and far-flung hamlets. Affordable, accessible and high-quality medical treatment, he said, should not remain beyond the reach of any citizen.
Expressing confidence in the vision behind the project, Shri Birla stressed that the Maheshwari Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre should strive to emerge as a model charitable research institution — an institution whose work and achievements could serve as an example for the entire country. He said that its role should extend beyond medical treatment to encompass excellence in medical and nursing education, advanced research, innovation and the development of new solutions to meet the emerging healthcare needs of society. He observed that when society is guided by a noble purpose and strengthened by firm resolve, there is never a shortage of resources. He said that wealth finds its highest purpose when it is utilised for the welfare and upliftment of society, and that individuals earn the deepest and most enduring respect when their success and resources are dedicated to the larger public good.
Shri Birla extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Maheshwari Samaj and all those associated with this visionary initiative. He expressed confidence that the Maheshwari Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre would become an enduring symbol of service and compassion and would make a significant contribution towards providing quality, affordable and accessible healthcare to people across Rajasthan and the country.
