Assam Media Delegation Visits CSIR-SERC Chennai

प्रविष्टि तिथि: 19 AUG 2026 7:30PM by PIB Chennai

A media delegation comprising 11 distinguished Editors from Assam, accompanied by officials from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Guwahati, visited the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC), Chennai, on 19 August 2026. Organised under the Central Sector Scheme "Development Communication & Information Dissemination", the visit aimed to showcase the scientific advancements and industrial developments of Tamil Nadu to the Northeastern media fraternity.

Dr. (Smt.) N. Anandavalli, Director, CSIR-SERC, briefed the delegation on the Centre's core research and development capabilities in structural engineering. Addressing the specific disaster vulnerabilities of Assam and the Northeast region—including high seismic activity, floods, and landslides—Dr. Anandavalli highlighted CSIR-SERC's specialised technologies designed to build safe, sustainable, and disaster-resilient infrastructure.

During the interactive tour, the delegation visited state-of-the-art facilities, including the Advanced Seismic Testing and Research (ASTaR) Laboratory, the Wind Engineering Laboratory (WEL), and the Fatigue & Fracture Laboratory (FFL). Scientists demonstrated research on earthquake-resistant designs, wind effect mitigation, material endurance, and structural failure prevention. The delegation also witnessed live technical demonstrations highlighting practical solutions for real-world engineering challenges.

The visit offered the media representatives invaluable insights into cutting-edge disaster mitigation research while fostering stronger scientific outreach. By bridging CSIR-SERC's research outputs with the media, the tour facilitates wider dissemination of critical safety and engineering knowledge across Assam and the broader Northeastern region.
