For students from financially constrained backgrounds, pursuing higher education and advanced research can involve significant financial and academic challenges. Timely financial assistance can provide students with greater stability, enabling them to continue their studies, focus on research and achieve their academic and professional aspirations.
Demonstrating how financial support under the National Fellowship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students can support higher education and research, Shri Badde Prasanna Kumar, a 32-year-old SC student and Research Associate, successfully pursued and completed his PhD in Agriculture Microbiology.
Coming from a family that encouraged education, Prasanna Kumar received support to pursue higher studies despite financial limitations. With a strong interest in agricultural sciences, he pursued higher education in agriculture and eventually undertook doctoral research in Agriculture Microbiology.
During his higher education and research journey, he faced several challenges, including financial constraints, research-related uncertainties, repeated experimental failures and the pressure of completing academic milestones within prescribed timelines. Managing research expenses, accessing laboratory resources and balancing academic responsibilities with career planning were also significant challenges. Limited access to advanced research facilities and scientific exposure during the initial stages, along with relocation and adjustment to new academic environments, further added to the difficulties.

Despite these challenges, Prasanna Kumar aspired to successfully complete his PhD through quality research, strengthen his scientific knowledge and research skills, and build a stable career in the field of agriculture microbiology. His family continued to encourage his education despite the financial limitations and uncertainties associated with long-term research and academic commitments.
A turning point came with the support provided under the National Fellowship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students. Beginning in 2017, he received financial assistance of ₹35,000 per month. The fellowship support helped him manage academic and research-related expenses and continue his higher education without major financial stress.
The assistance enabled Prasanna Kumar to remain focused on his research activities and scientific work. It provided greater stability and continuity during his doctoral journey, helping him sustain his research activities and work towards completing his academic milestones successfully.
With the support of the fellowship, Prasanna Kumar successfully completed his PhD in Agriculture Microbiology, strengthening his scientific knowledge and research capabilities. He is currently working as a Research Associate, continuing his professional journey in the field of agriculture microbiology.
His journey demonstrates how financial assistance under the National Fellowship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students can help students overcome economic barriers, pursue advanced education and research, and strengthen their professional capabilities. The support enabled Prasanna Kumar to focus on his academic goals and successfully progress from doctoral research towards a professional career in agricultural sciences.
According to Shri Badde Prasanna Kumar, “The fellowship support helped me sustain my research activities, focus on scientific work, and successfully complete my academic goals.”
Shri Badde Prasanna Kumar’s journey highlights how timely financial assistance can provide continuity and stability to students pursuing higher education and research. From navigating financial and academic challenges during his doctoral studies to successfully completing his PhD and progressing as a Research Associate, his journey reflects determination, academic commitment and the importance of financial support in enabling students to pursue their educational and professional aspirations.
