DIRECTORATE OF CENSUS OPERATIONS, TAMIL NADU HOUSELISTING AND HOUSING CENSUS

CENSUS-2027

प्रविष्टि तिथि: 31 JUL 2026 1:32PM by PIB Chennai

The Houselisting and Housing Census field operations are scheduled to take place across Tamil Nadu from 1st August to August 30th 2026. During this period, approximately 1.15 lakh enumerators—supervised by approximately 19,000 Supervisors—will conduct door-to-door visits across all households, covering 1.2 Lakh House Listing Blocks in 1026 administrative charges. Using a structured questionnaire comprising 33-questions, the exercise gathers critical data on housing conditions, basic amenities, and utility access.

To ensure comprehensive and accurate coverage, India’s first fully digital Census combines modern technology with traditional door-to-door outreach. During field visits, Enumerators will use a dedicated mobile application to record data digitally, enabling faster processing, higher accuracy, and a seamless Census experience.

In accordance with the Census Act, 1948, all collected information is legally protected, kept completely confidential, and used exclusively for statistical analysis and public policy formulation. The digital collection and processing of Census data also comply with the provisions of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.

Prior to the field operations, the newly introduced Self-Enumeration (SE) facility for Census 2027 has received an encouraging public response from residents of Tamil Nadu, above 10 lakh households successfully submitting their details online via the official portal (se.census.gov.in) from 17 July 2026 to 31 July 2026.

Residents who have completed Self-Enumeration are requested to keep their generated Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) readily available to share with the visiting Enumerator to facilitate the completion of the Houselisting Operation (HLO). All Households, including those that did not avail themselves of the Self Enumeration facility will be covered during the Houselisting and Housing Census field operations.

As the foundational phase of the Census, this data forms an essential statistical framework to support strategic planning, targeted welfare schemes, evidence-based policy formulation, and long-term development at all administrative levels. All residents of Tamil Nadu State are urged to offer complete support to field staff during the Houselisting phase and contribute to the successful conduct of this important national exercise.
