Posted On: 28 JUL 2026 6:37PM by PIB Raipur

On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, the Central Bureau of Communication, Bilaspur organised an oral discussion programme among students at Government High School, Khamtarai, Bilaspur, to raise awareness about hepatitis, its prevention and timely treatment.

The programme highlighted the 2026 theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down”, and focused on dispelling myths associated with the disease, encouraging timely testing and treatment, and promoting greater public awareness. The students were informed that World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on July 28 in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The day commemorates Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg, whose pioneering work included the discovery of the hepatitis B virus and significant contributions to the development of its vaccine.

During the interaction, students were briefed on the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of hepatitis. They were encouraged to get vaccinated against hepatitis B, consume safe and hygienic food and water, avoid exposure to infected blood and unsafe needles, follow safe practices and undergo periodic health check-ups. It was emphasised that timely detection and treatment can substantially reduce the risk of serious complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The students were also apprised of the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY). In addition, a session on de-addiction was held, urging young people to stay away from substance abuse and adopt a healthy, disciplined and responsible lifestyle.

School Principal Mrs Alka Gouraha and Mrs Jaya Bisen appreciated the initiative and described the programme as informative and useful for students. They expressed the need for organising similar awareness programmes in the future to support the overall development of students.
