A review meeting on solid waste management on Railway lands and within Greater Bengaluru was held today at the Divisional Railway Office, Bengaluru. The meeting was jointly chaired by Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, Shri V. Somanna, and Hon'ble Minister for Greater Bengaluru Development, Government of Karnataka, Shri Krishna Byre Gowda.

The meeting discussed the issue of garbage, construction debris and unauthorized dumping of waste on Railway lands. The Ministers reviewed the present situation and emphasized the need for close coordination between the Railways and the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to keep Railway lands clean.

During the meeting, Railway officials identified several locations where garbage and debris have accumulated due to unauthorized dumping. Shri V. Somanna directed the officials to remove the waste at the earliest and prepare a comprehensive action plan for clearing Railway lands.

The Hon'ble Minister, Shri V. Somanna, stressed that all concerned agencies, including the Greater Bengaluru Authority, Railways, BWSSB, BESCOM and other civic bodies, should work together under a common coordination mechanism to ensure effective waste management. He also noted that the introduction of bio-toilets in trains has brought a significant improvement in railway sanitation.

He directed that strict action, including the imposition of penalties, be taken against those found dumping garbage or debris on railway land.

Shri Krishna Byre Gowda emphasized the need to make Bengaluru free from waste and said that a month-long cleanliness campaign will be launched from August 1, 2026. He also directed officials to remove weeds growing along Railway tracks and said that preventive measures should be taken to stop future dumping.

Both the Ministers instructed officials to identify and close unauthorized access points that are being used for dumping garbage and construction debris onto Railway property.

Officials of the Greater Bengaluru Authority informed the meeting that scientific methods would be adopted for the disposal of waste and assured full cooperation in implementing long-term solutions.

The meeting was attended by Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru Division, Shri Ashutosh Kumar Singh; Chief Commissioner, Greater Bengaluru Authority, Shri Maheshwara Rao; Chairperson, BWSSB, Smt. Manjula; Chief Engineer, K-RIDE, Shri Lakshman Singh; and senior officers from South Western Railway and the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
