Science City, Kolkata, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, today (July 22, 2026) commemorated the 7th Anniversary of the launch of Chandrayaan-2 by organising a special science lecture at the Mini Auditorium, Science City, Kolkata.

Launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on July 22, 2019, Chandrayaan-2 marked a significant milestone in India's lunar exploration programme. While the mission achieved remarkable scientific success through its Orbiter, which continues to provide valuable scientific data on the Moon, it also laid the technological foundation for the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission. Chandrayaan-2 remains an enduring symbol of India's scientific excellence, innovation and determination in space exploration.

The commemorative programme featured a special lecture titled "Our Universe", delivered by Prof. Narayan Banerjee, Retired Professor, IISER Kolkata, and Distinguished Professor, Jadavpur University. During the lecture, Prof. Banerjee explained how the Universe began and how it has changed over time. He spoke about exciting discoveries in astronomy and space science, and how scientists continue to explore the mysteries of the cosmos. He also highlighted India's achievements in space research and inspired students to stay curious, ask questions and develop a scientific outlook.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Narayan Banerjee said, "The Universe continues to challenge our imagination and expand the frontiers of human knowledge. It is constantly evolving, with its structure and volume continuing to change over time. The Big Bang model provides the most widely accepted scientific framework for understanding the origin and evolution of the Universe, enabling scientists to develop predictions that can be tested through observations and experiments. Cosmology, as the study of the Universe on the largest scales, continues to deepen our understanding of its past, present and future. India's achievements through landmark missions such as Chandrayaan-2 demonstrate how scientific curiosity, innovation and perseverance inspire future generations to explore the unknown and contribute to the advancement of science."

Speaking on the occasion, Director, Science City, Kolkata, Shri Pramod Grover said, "Chandrayaan-2 represents India's unwavering commitment to scientific advancement and innovation. Through this commemorative lecture, Science City seeks to ignite curiosity among young minds and encourage them to pursue science, technology and space research. Such initiatives strengthen scientific temper and inspire the next generation to contribute meaningfully to India's growing achievements in science and space exploration."

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 300 students and teachers representing six schools across Kolkata. The interactive session generated immense interest among the young participants, who engaged with Prof. Banerjee during the question-and-answer session.

Science City, Kolkata has consistently promoted scientific temper through interactive exhibitions, educational programmes, science lectures, workshops and outreach initiatives. The observance of the Chandrayaan-2 launch anniversary reflects its continued commitment to making science engaging, accessible and inspiring for people of all ages while encouraging young minds to dream, discover and innovate.
