Prof. Srinivasa Murty Srinivasula Assumes Charge as Director of IISER

Prof. Srinivasa Murty Srinivasula has assumed charge as the fourth Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Thiruvananthapuram, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

A native of Andhra Pradesh, Prof. Srinivasula obtained his Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in 1993. Currently serving as an HAG Professor at IISER Thiruvananthapuram, he has held several key leadership positions at the institute over the past decade. His administrative responsibilities have included serving as Deputy Director, Registrar, Dean (Administration), Dean of Student Welfare, and Chair of the School of Biology. He has also chaired and served as a member of several statutory committees of the institute.

Before joining IISER Thiruvananthapuram in 2012, Prof. Srinivasula spent more than 18 years conducting research at leading scientific institutions in the United States. He served for nearly nine years as a Principal Investigator at the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.

An internationally acclaimed biologist, Prof. Srinivasula's research has made significant contributions to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying key biological processes, including programmed cell death (apoptosis) and cell survival. His scientific work has received widespread international recognition, with his research publications being cited more than 57,000 times in the scientific literature.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science, Prof. Srinivasula has received several prestigious honours, including the Sidney Kimmel Scholar Award and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Special Fellow award.

At IISER Thiruvananthapuram, his Laboratory of Immune Cell Biology (LICB) leads fundamental research on cell signalling, organelle homeostasis, ubiquitin signalling, and host-pathogen interactions.
