ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids (NRCO), Pakyong, successfully organized a ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ (KBA) and input distribution programme for farmers of Lashithang village, Pakyong district, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

As part of the Abhiyan, the KBA team conducted training and awareness sessions for local farmers on promotion of organic farming, balanced use of fertilizers, crop planning to reduce fertilizer dependency, adoption of scientific and technology-based sustainable farming practices, green manuring, use of organic substitutes, preparation of compost and organic nutrient solutions, their application methods, and Integrated Nutrient Management (INM).

During the programme, a distribution drive was also organized under an ICAR North Eastern Hill (NEH) scheme sponsored by ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru. A total of 30 farmers/beneficiaries from Lashithang village received avocado and pummelo plant saplings.

The nationwide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ is being observed from 1st–30th June, 2026, across all districts of the country by 1650+ field teams and 500+ special campaign teams with ICAR scientists. The main objective of the campaign is to create awareness on soil test-based judicious and balanced use of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs, including green manures, organic and bio-products, to reduce chemical fertilizer use and improve soil health through training and field demonstrations.

The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. S.P. Das, Director, ICAR-NRCO. Dr. Kalaivanan, NEH Nodal Officer, Dr. L.C. De, KBA Nodal Officer, Dr. T. Rihne, Co-Nodal Officer, and Dr. Suman Natta, along with other technical staff of ICAR-NRCO, Pakyong, coordinated the event.

The initiative drew a positive response from the farmers and beneficiaries of Lashithang village, who appreciated the efforts towards promoting organic practices and providing plant sapling.
