The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Field Office Chandel, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, organized a Special Outreach Programme (SOP) on World No-Tobacco Day at Purum Tampak Village, Chandel district. This year’s event was held under the theme, “Unmasking the appeal—countering nicotine and tobacco addiction.”

The program featured several prominent local figures, including MK Ahalpi (President of Purum Tampak SHG Cluster), PR Winson Babu (Retired Headmaster) as special guests, and Leivon John Kobari (Principal, Smart Life Academy) as the resource person.
Mathew Sk Bengam, Field Publicity Assistant of CBC, FO Chandel, outlined the campaign's goal to unmask tobacco industry tactics and counter addiction.
Addressing the gathering, MK Ahalpi thanked the CBC for educating women’s self-help groups (SHGs) and urged families to fight the menace. Winson Babu emphasized the devastating effects of tobacco on youth, calling on SHG members to actively protect the next generation from these hazardous products.
In his detailed presentation, Leivon John Kobari explained the dangers of both smoked and smokeless tobacco. He noted that Northeast India faces significant social and security challenges due to its proximity to major illegal drug trafficking routes, specifically mentioning Manipur’s border connection to Myanmar. Kobari appealed to the community to stand united against the spread of substance abuse to protect families and future generations.

The outreach event also featured a live spot-quiz contest, with prizes and certificates distributed to the winners. The program concluded with a vote of thanks from the CBC Chandel team.
