With the official nod of the West Bengal Government for the immediate rollout of the census exercise in the State through the publication of the Gazette Notification on May 11, 2026, the Directorate of Census Operations, West Bengal is all set to start the exercise shortly. Before that, the State Chief Minister, Shri Suvendu Adhikari will be inaugurating a conference of the Principal Census Officers tomorrow at the State Secretariat’s auditorium, Nabanna Sabhaghar.
The conference will highlight the present status of the Census operation followed by presentation of Census 2027 Mascot (Pragati and Vikas), Chief Minister’s views on Census operations in the State and Principal Census Officers’ training.
An official communiqué from the Directorate of Census Operations, West Bengal has stated that the Census 2027 will use the secure HLO mobile application to collect responses from households, web-based platform such as the Census Management and Monitoring System Portal (CMMS Portal) for near real-time monitoring and satellite-assisted mapping using the House listing Block Creator Web Portal (HLBC Portal).
Another transformational and landmark feature of this Census is the facility of Self Enumeration. The Self-Enumeration facility gives households the opportunity to voluntarily submit their details and responses online through their official portal, www.se.census.gov.in. After successful submission, a unique Self-Enumeration ID will be generated which will be collected by the visiting Enumerator to further upload it in the central database. This Self Enumeration facility will be available from 1 August 1, 2026 to August 15, 2026. Households that do not opt for Self-Enumeration will be covered through physical door-to-door visits by Enumerators.
After Self-Enumeration, HLO Phase-I will be conducted throughout the State from August 16, 2026 to September 14, 2026. During this phase, Enumerators will visit households to collect information relating to housing conditions, household amenities, assets, family particulars, and economic activities through a structured questionnaire comprising 33 notified questions under the Census framework.
Residents have been requested to cooperate with the Census officials in the discharge of their duties and provide complete and accurate information. In this regard, people may even contact the toll-free helpline number 1855 for any necessary information required.
