Prof. Balasubramanian K., Dean (Academics) and Senior Professor, Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, DIAT, has been awarded the First Prize in the Distinguished Faculty and Scientist Category at the HPCL New Generation Ideation Contest 2025. The award was presented at the HPCL R&D Centre, Bengaluru, on 30 March 2026.

The contest witnessed strong participation from across the country, with 495 submissions evaluated through a multi-stage process by research experts from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). The proposal titled “Zeolite–MXene Hybrids: A Next-Generation Solution for CO₂ and H₂S Capture,” submitted by Prof. Balasubramanian K. along with his Ph.D. scholar Ms. Shruti Gupta, was shortlisted among the top 200 entries and subsequently selected for the top honour.

The final evaluation was conducted by a panel of domain experts from industry and academia. The award recognises the proposal’s relevance in addressing challenges related to CO₂ and H₂S emissions through advanced material-based solutions, with potential applications in refining and petrochemical processes.

The award ceremony was graced by eminent scientists and academicians. The Chief Guest, Padma Shri awardee Prof. G. D. Yadav, a leading Chemical Engineer and an academician who holds the National Science Chair congratulated to Prof. Balasubramaniann K and highlighted the importance of innovation in addressing industrial and environmental challenges.

Dr. B.H.V.S. Narayana Murthy, Vice Chancellor, DIAT, congratulated Prof. Balasubramanian K. and his PhD scholar on this achievement, noting that such recognitions reflect the institute’s commitment to research and innovation.
