Bhilai Steel Plant Holds Performance Enhancement Workshop on “Zero Accident, Zero Breakdown” at HRDC

A Performance Enhancement Workshop on the theme “Zero Accident, Zero Breakdown” was organised at the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) with the objective of strengthening behavioural safety practices and promoting best operational standards in critical plant areas.

The workshop was conceptualised by Shri Sajeev Varghese, Chief General Manager (Ore Handling Plant and Sinter Plant–3) to foster a stronger safety mindset among employees and reinforce safe work practices across operational and maintenance activities. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from executives, non-executives and contractual employees of the Ore Handling Plant (OHP), while executives from Sinter Plant–3 (SP–3) also took part, reflecting a collaborative approach towards safety and operational excellence within the plant.

Addressing the participants, Shri G.P. Singh, former Executive Director (Safety and Fire Services) and currently Governing Council Member of the Safety Skill Development Foundation (SSDF), shared valuable insights drawn from his extensive experience in industrial safety. He emphasised the importance of behavioural discipline, proactive identification of risks and collective commitment among employees to achieve accident-free operations in industrial workplaces.

During the workshop, Shri Yogesh Shastri, Chief General Manager (BRM) conducted an interactive and thought-provoking session on Best Operation and Maintenance Practices, highlighting practical measures to enhance the reliability, performance and efficiency of plant equipment.

Shri Sajeev Varghese, Chief General Manager (Ore Handling Plant and Sinter Plant–3) also led a detailed session on Ownership and 360-Degree Safety Observation, underlining the significance of individual responsibility, constant vigilance and proactive safety behaviour to ensure safe and uninterrupted plant operations.

Participants actively engaged in group discussions, brainstorming exercises and communication sessions aimed at identifying effective strategies for implementing best practices in operation and maintenance. The deliberations stressed the importance of fostering a sense of ownership, strengthening comprehensive safety observation mechanisms and adopting proactive measures to minimise the risk of accidents and equipment breakdowns.

The discussions also explored practical approaches to enhance conveyor productivity, improve equipment reliability and strengthen overall operational efficiency, which are crucial for the smooth functioning of the Ore Handling Plant.

The workshop concluded with group presentations on action plans and key learnings, during which participants shared recommendations for strengthening safety practices and improving operational performance in their respective areas of work. Senior officials appreciated the active involvement of employees and encouraged them to effectively implement the suggested measures at their workplaces.

The programme was coordinated by Shri Sanjeev Shrivastava, General Manager In-Charge (Human Resources – Learning and Development), Shri Mukul Saharia, General Manager (Learning and Administration) and Shri Prashant Jain, Deputy General Manager.
