The Ujjain edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM), the world's largest international theatre festival, began on February 16th at the open-air theatre of the Kalidas Academy. The event is being organised by the National School of Drama (NSD) in collaboration with the Maharaja Vikramaditya Research Centre. Five plays will be staged in this Ujjain edition, presented in several Indian languages, including Sanskrit and Prakrit. Prof. Bharat Gupta (Vice President of the NSD Society and Padma Shri awardee) was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. He was accompanied by Mr. Rajesh Singh Kushwaha (Executive Member of Vikram University), Mr. Ayush Gupta (Healing Coach and Yoga Expert), Mr. Sanjay Yadav (Vice President, Veer Bharat), and Mr. Raj Bendre (Festival Coordinator of the Ujjain edition).

The closing performance on February 20th will be Abhigyan Shakuntalam, written by the great poet Kalidas and directed by Arpita Dhagat. It will be staged in Hindi by Rang Theatre Forum, Sagar (Madhya Pradesh). The 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav will run for 25 days from January 27 to February 20, 2026. During this period, 277 theatrical performances will be presented in 228 Indian and international languages, including many rare and lesser-known languages. Artists from nine countries and theatre groups from all states and union territories of India are participating in the festival.

The festival celebrates India's theatre diversity, featuring children's groups, tribal communities, and artists from marginalized sections of society. This reflects NSD's commitment to inclusivity and universal dissemination of theatre. NSD is continuously working to promote theatre. Recently, it launched the 'Rang Aakash' internet radio channel and 'Natyam', an OTT platform, allowing theatre lovers across the country to watch major NSD productions.
