Clarification on Fire Incident at Two-Wheeler Parking Area, Thrissur Railway Station

Posted On: 04 JAN 2026 8:31PM by PIB Thiruvananthpuram

A fire incident occurred on 04 January 2026 at around 06.30 hrs at the two-wheeler parking area near the second entry (west side) of Thrissur Railway Station.

On noticing the incident, on-duty Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, along with Government Railway Police (GRP), Thrissur, immediately informed the Station Master on duty and rushed to the site. Initial firefighting was undertaken using fire extinguishers available at the parking area and the railway station. The Fire Force, Thrissur, reached the spot at 06.45 hrs and the fire was fully extinguished by 07.15 hrs.

No casualty or injury to passengers, railway staff, or members of the public was reported.

Based on eyewitness accounts and preliminary assessment, it is clarified that the fire did not originate from Overhead Equipment (OHE) or any railway electrical installation. Preliminary findings indicate that the fire originated from one of the parked two-wheelers. An eyewitness, along with parking staff, attempted to control the fire at the initial stage; however, it spread rapidly before additional assistance could arrive.

Approximately 250 two-wheelers parked in the area were fully or partially burnt and damaged in the incident.

External flame impact on a departmental tower wagon in the yard was noticed and promptly attended to. The wagon was subsequently
 moved to a safe location.

The parking area was covered under CCTV surveillance. However, the CCTV control unit and hard disk were damaged in the fire and have been handed over to the local police (Thrissur West) for forensic examination. A case has been registered by the local police and investigation is underway. A joint departmental fact-finding inquiry by Railways has also been initiated.

With regard to reports alleging lack of permission for construction of the temporary parking shed, it is clarified that as per the provisions of the Indian Railways Act and the Government Buildings Act, no permission from the Corporation or any other local body is required for construction within Railway premises. No notice or communication has been received from Thrissur Corporation in this regard.

The situation was handled promptly through coordinated efforts of Railway staff, Fire Force, police, and civil authorities.

To assist affected passengers, the parking agency has opened a Help Desk and Assistance Centre at the parking area to facilitate coordination with owners of damaged vehicles and to assist with insurance and claim-related procedures. A helpline number has also been provided.

Railway officials stated that further updates will be issued based on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
