: In a step towards strengthening India–Georgia relations, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla today held bilateral discussions with a high-level Parliamentary Delegation from Georgia led by H.E. Mr. Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia. The dialogue meeting covered enhanced parliamentary cooperation, new institutional linkages, and collaboration across sectors including trade, technology, education, energy, and people-to-people engagement.
Welcoming the Delegation, Shri Birla recalled his earlier meeting with Mr. Papuashvili during the 150th IPU Assembly in Tashkent. He said India and Georgia share warm ties anchored in democratic values. Appreciating the active functioning of the Georgia–India Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Georgian Parliament, he informed that the Indian Parliament is in the process of establishing the India–Georgia Parliamentary Friendship Group to deepen parliamentary exchanges.
During the talks, both sides discussed strengthening institutional cooperation, sharing best practices, and enhancing the role of parliamentary committees. Shri Birla briefed the delegation on the functioning of India’s parliamentary committees—Financial Committees, Department-related Standing Committees, House Committees, and Joint/Select Committees—emphasizing consensus-based decision-making and cross-party collaboration. He underscored that regular parliamentary exchanges are essential to strengthening democratic traditions and improving legislative effectiveness.
On economic cooperation, the Speaker observed that Indian investments in Georgia—especially in steel, agriculture, services, and infrastructure—continue to expand. He identified substantial scope for collaboration in information technology, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, culture, and tourism. He also noted the increasing number of Indian students in Georgia and thanked the Georgian Government for ensuring their welfare, safety, and a conducive learning environment. He further welcomed growing tourism linkages and improved connectivity between the two countries.
Later, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar attended a luncheon hosted by Hon’ble Speaker Shri Om Birla in honour of the visiting delegation. Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs; Shri Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs; Members of Parliament Dr. Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Dr. Shabari Byreddy, and Shri Naba Charan Majhi were also present.
Earlier in the day, the Georgian Delegation observed the proceedings of the Lok Sabha from the Special Gallery, witnessing the vibrancy of India’s parliamentary functioning and the active participation of Members representing the aspirations of 1.4 billion citizens.
