The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the SRM Institute of Science & Technology (SRMIST) to collaborate on joint studies, research, and technical contributions in advanced telecom technologies and global standardisation activities.

The partnership aims to develop India-specific standards and test frameworks, explore future network technologies such as 6G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), NTN, Quantum Communication and enhance India’s participation in ITU-T, ITU-D, ITU-R (International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Sector, Telecommunication Development Sector and Telecommunication Development Sector respectively) Study and Focus Groups.

The MoU was signed on 13th November 2025 by Shri Amit Kumar Srivastava, DDG (Mobile Technologies), TEC and, Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar, SRMIST in presence of Shri Pawan Gupta, DDG (Admin.) TEC, Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice Chancellor SRMIST and Dr. Revathi Venkataraman, Professor and Chairperson (School of Computing), SRMIST at SRMIST Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu.

The partnership creates a formal framework for TEC to work closely with SRMIST on next-generation telecom and standardisation activities.

Key Areas of Collaboration:

  • 6G: Collaborative research on AI-driven resource allocation, intelligent scheduling, low-latency coding, and computation-aware networking. Exploration of 6G architecture and enabling technologies.
  • Digital Twin: Joint development of frameworks for network behavior modeling and optimization.
  • Quantum Communication: Studies on quantum communication protocols, quantum cryptography, and quantum-assisted 6G architectures.
  • Edge AI & Distributed Intelligence: Development of real-time analytics, automation, and predictive maintenance solutions.
  • AI & Generative Models: Research in LLMs, Generative AI, federated learning, and adaptive neural architectures for network automation.
  • Cyber Security: Collaborative research on secure and resilient communication networks.
  • RF, Microwave & Terahertz: Joint research in advanced wireless communication technologies.
  • mmWave & Cognitive Radio: Collaborative studies on beamforming and spectrum-efficient communication.
  • Optical Communications: Collaborative research in optical communications and optical wireless communication systems.
  • Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs): Standardization and research on satellite-terrestrial integration and HAPS.
  • Open RAN & Network Disaggregation: Studies on open interfaces, orchestration, and interoperability.

This partnership aims to accelerate indigenous R&D and increase India’s influence in global standardisation processes by strengthening India’s contributions to global standardisation bodies such as ITU and 3GPP.

This collaboration will further the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by strengthening indigenous research, design and manufacturing in telecom - developing India-specific standards, test frameworks and home-grown solutions that bolster national self-reliance, secure critical communications infrastructure and reduce dependence on imports.
