CSIR-SERC organises the Student-Scientist Connect Programme for Government school students in Krishnagiri District

CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC) Chennai, a constituent laboratory of CSIR, and CSIR Madras Complex (CMC – a congregate of regional units of 5 CSIR laboratories namely CSIR-CECRI, CSIR-CEERI, CSIR-NEERI, CSIR-CSIO, CSIR-NML) Chennai jointly organised Jigyasa ATL workshop (Student-Scientist Connect programme) as part of Atal Tinkering Lab adoption and mentoring in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu State during the 15-16 October 2025 at the following schools:
- Government Higher Secondary School, Keelkuppam, Krishnagiri Dt.
- Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Royakottai,Krishnagiri Dt.
- Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Shoolagiri, Krishnagiri Dt.
- Government Higher Secondary. School, Pavakkal, Krishnagiri Dt.
"JIGYASA" is a major initiative taken up by CSIR at national level, during its Platinum Jubilee Celebration Year. CSIR is widening and deepening its Scientific Social Responsibility further with this programme. The focus of this scheme is connecting school students and scientists so as to extend student's classroom learning with well-planned research laboratory-based learning. The Jigyasa programme is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a new India and Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) of Scientific Community and Institutions.
Also, as a part of the workshop, two demo and hands-on science experiments were conducted for the students. Scientists assisted the student in making a battery with simple commonly available things and lite a LED light through it. The students also built a DC motor with commonly available portable battery, copper coil and safety pins. The team from CSIR explained the students about the scientific reasons behind the hands-on. Nearly 400 students and 30 teachers participated in the workshops.
