Department of Posts will upgrade Speed Post Service w.e.f. 1st October 2025. With real-time tracking and OTP based Delivery, Speed Post is becoming more safe, secured, smarter and more citizen-friendly than ever before. Now, 'Registration' or 'Registered Post' means value added service for Speed Post items (documents and Parcels) for addressee specific delivery. Sh. Krishna Kumar Yadav, Postmaster General of North Gujarat Region, Ahmedabad said that accordingly Department of Posts has notified the overhaul, which will take effect on October 1, along with a revised tariff structure for Speed Post.

Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav, said that under the new system, Speed Post Documents and Parcels will serve as the fundamental service for delivering all kinds of Accountable items including Legal Documents and Statutory Communications. Now, Speed Post Service will either be Address Specific or Addressee Specific as per the instructions given by Sender during booking. Registration facility will be offered exclusively as a supplementary value-added option for ₹ 05 Per Article (GST Extra) for Addressee Specific Delivery. Insurance Facility on Speed Post Items will be continued as usual.
Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav further added that, apart from this, from 01st October 2025, OTP based delivery as a Value-added Service will be started in Speed Post Document and Parcels. Customers have to pay ₹ 05 (GST Extra) as a Value addition Charge at the time booking for availing the facility of OTP based delivery. This mark a big leap in the era of Digitization. Enhanced customer-centric, next generation features of OTP-based delivery will be operationalized only due to recent technological transformation into APT 2.0 Platform, cloud-ready system to transform India Post into a modern Public logistics Organization. This step will streamline accountable mail delivery, reduce overlaps in services and ensure enhanced user experience.
Along with this Rationalisation, Department of Posts has also revised tariffs for Speed Post Documents w.e.f. 01st October 2025. Indian Postal Service Officer Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav told that, the new rates (Exclusive of GST) will be ₹ 19 for intra-city deliveries and ₹ 47 for rest of India deliveries for the first 50 gram. Then after, depending upon the Distance and weight, the Rate Structure as prescribed by Department of Posts through Gazetted Notification will be applied. However, Maximum Tariff for Speed Post Document having Weight upto 500 Grams with longest route delivery within India will be ₹ 93 (GST Extra). Therefore, updated Speed Post rates are market oriented, transparent, fair & GST clearly separated. To Promote e-commerce business, Discount on Booking amount is available for contractual customers who provides minimum monthly business of ₹ 9 Lakh. The appliable discount rate ranges from 10% to 50 %.
It is worth mentioning that, India Post launched its Speed Post service on August 1, 1986 as a time-bound, efficient, and secure delivery service for letters and parcels. The service, initially called "EMS Speed Post," was a key part of India Post's modernization efforts to compete with private courier companies by offering faster and more reliable delivery across the country.
