World Maritime Day 2025 celebrated under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”

World Maritime Day 2025, organized by the National Maritime Day Celebrations (Central) Committee under the aegis of the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, was successfully held today under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

The event was graced by Shri Sameer Kumar Khare, IAS (Retired), Chairperson, National Shipping Board, as Chief Guest, along with Shri Sushil Mansingh Khopde, IPS, Additional Director General of Shipping, and Capt. Som Raj, Personnel & Admin, Shipping Corporation of India. Their addresses highlighted the vital role of seafarers in global commerce and the significance of sustainable maritime practices.

Video messages from Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, as well as insights from Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General, IMO, added a global perspective to the celebrations.

Enriching presentations were delivered by Ash Mohomad, DDG; Dr. Sanjay Bhavnani, Director & C.O.O., MMS Maritime (India) Pvt. Ltd.; Shri Gopikrishna C., Engineer & Ship Surveyor; and Dr. Sudhir S. Kohakade, DDG, showcasing DG Shipping’s initiatives on maritime safety, sustainability, and alignment with international standards.

The cadets of SCI-MTI added vibrancy with their cultural performance. The Committee expressed heartfelt thanks to all officers, staff, volunteers, media, and seafarers for making the event a grand success. The celebrations reinforced the importance of the 2025 theme, inspiring collective responsibility towards safe, inclusive, and sustainable oceans for generations to come.
