Kochi: A two-day workshop on marine macro algal research for functional food and nutraceutical development began at ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on Thursday with a call to explore the untapped potential of marine organisms for the benefit of human well-being. During the inauguration of the workshop, experts highlighted the significance of seaweed-derived bioactive compounds to support human health.

“Exploring marine macro algae for functional foods and nutraceuticals will be a game-changer for managing lifestyle diseases”, said Dr Kajal Chakraborty, Director of National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR).
Research on bioprospecting would help identify and evaluate the health properties of seaweed species to promote them as healthy food sources, he said.
Aimed to build capacity among young researchers, the workshop serves as a platform to share knowledge, showcase advances, and explore future directions for translating this vital research into societal benefits, said CMFRI Director Dr Grinson George.

As many as 25 faculty members from academic and research institutions are attending the workshop.
Dr V V R Suresh, Dr Adnan H Gora and Dr Jeena N S spoke on the occasion.
