The Ministry of External Affairs in coordination with National Informatics Centre has launched the e-Sanad portal for verification & attestation of documents of Indian citizens to be submitted in Foreign Embassies / Missions or abroad.

Addressing the media on 19 September 2025, Shri S. Vijayakumar, Head of the Branch Secretariat, Ministry of External Affairs, Chennai, highlighted the benefits and process involved with the e-Sanad portal.

The e-Sanad portal aims at providing a centralized platform for contactless, faceless, cashless and paperless document verification/attestation/apostille for Indian citizens living in India and overseas.

Applicants can register on the e-Sanad portal, https://esanad.nic.in/register.  Once registered, applicants can upload their documents, either by directly accessing a digital repository or by uploading scanned copies. The portal then facilitates a two step verification of these documents by the respective issuing authorities, ensuring their authenticity. Following this verification, the MEA issues a digital attestation or apostille within 7 working days. Applicants can track the real-time status of their applications online.

One of the most important features of the e-Sanad portal is that it allows foreign departments and authorities to cross-verify the authenticity of the digitally attested or apostilled documents using the link https://esanad.nic.in/eregister.  

Shri  S. Vijayakumar further added that apostilled Documents, which do not require re-attestation are recognized only by the 114 Hague Convention Countries.  Therefore, applicants must ensure that the countries are listed under the Hague Convention before applying for Apostilled documents. For documents submitted outside e-Sanad, five agencies have been authorized to accept the applications and forward them to the Branch Secratariat for further process.
