NTPC Western Region-I HQs, Mumbai in association with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, has launched a five-day AI-ML Certification Programme for its employees. The programme began today at the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay, with 30 participants selected from NTPC projects and stations across the country.

The initiative has been introduced by NTPC Western Region-I Headquarters under the leadership of Smt. Vandana Chaturvedi, Regional Head of HR (West-I), with the objective of strengthening pecializedal capability in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and aligning it with applications in the energy and power sector. The academic guidance for the course is being provided by Prof. M. Radhakrishna, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences, Mr. Ajey Mehta, Executive Officer and CEO of CEP IIT Bombay, along with senior faculty members Prof. Vikram Vishal, Prof. Satyam Priyadarshy and Prof. Anand Singh.

The curriculum, spread across five days, includes modules on data processing, supervised and unsupervised learning, predictive maintenance, time series forecasting, deep learning and the use of generative AI in energy systems. The focus is on equipping participants with skills that can be directly applied to operational and strategic requirements of the power sector.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Vandana Chaturvedi said the programme reflected NTPC’s commitment to preparing its workforce for the future of the energy sector. “The knowledge of AI and ML will help NTPC in enhancing operational efficiency, driving innovation in power generation, and strengthening our transition towards sustainable and technology-driven growth. Through collaborations with premier institutes like IIT Bombay, we are creating a strong foundation for NTPC’s future readiness,” she said.

Mr. Ajey Mehta observed that IIT Bombay was pleased to partner with NTPC in a capacity-building initiative of this scale. “IIT Bombay has developed pecialized modules to address sector-specific challenges, and this collaboration is an opportunity to apply AI and ML in ways that will create tangible value for the power industry,” he said. Prof. Vikram Vishal added that the course had been structured to combine conceptual learning with real-world case studies in energy and sustainability and expressed the hope that by training NTPC professionals the gap between emerging technologies and their practical deployment in large-scale energy systems would be bridged.

The collaboration between NTPC and IIT Bombay marks a step towards integrating emerging technologies into the power sector through structured employee learning and development.
