Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMP, Kolkata), and TNS Logi-Park Pvt. Ltd. have formally embarked on a remarkable journey to breathe new life into the historic Dai-Ghat. This significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed as part of TNS Logi-Park Pvt. Ltd.'s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, marking the beginning of a new phase of redevelopment, renovation and beautification for this valued landmark.

Doi Ghat, located on the banks of the Hooghly River where the Adi Ganga meets the main channel opposite Howrah, derives its name from the Bengali word for curd (doi), reflecting its historical link to the local dairy trade. Once a bustling landing site, the ghat served as a small marketplace where curd and other goods arrived in earthen pots, especially from Howrah, known for its dairy production. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Adi Ganga made it a key point for riverine trade and daily exchanges between rural Bengal and the growing city of Calcutta.

The signing of this transformative MoU unfolded amidst an atmosphere of optimism at the SMP, Kolkata Head Office, located at 15, Strand Road, Kolkata. The proceedings were graced by Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMP, Kolkata, whose visionary leadership illuminated the path forward. He was joined by Shri Samrat Rahi, Deputy Chairman, SMP, Kolkata, along with the esteemed members of TNS Logi-Park Pvt. Ltd. – Shri R. P. Singh, CEO; Aditya Roy, CFO and Vishal Singh, Operations Head and other key officials of SMP, Kolkata. Previously, SMP, Kolkata has inked MoUs with Adani Group Pvt. Ltd. and PS Realty Group Pvt. Ltd. for renovating Kumartuli and Nimtalla Ghat, respectively.

Shri Raman said, “This initiative is a vivid reflection of our unwavering commitment to sustainable urban development and the cherished tapestry of our cultural heritage. The Doi-Ghat holds not only immense historic resonance but also served as a hub of local dairy trade in the old Calcutta. Renovating this ghat is a significant step towards SMP, Kolkata’s initiative to develop the Hooghly riverfront and add more to its aesthetics. We are profoundly delighted to welcome a socially responsible partner like TNS Logi-Park Pvt. Ltd. into this noble pursuit.”

Speaking on the occasion, Shri R. P. Singh, CEO, TNS Logi-Park, remarked, “We are truly honoured and privileged to contribute to the redevelopment of the historic Dahi Ghat, renowned for its rich legacy in the trade of dairy products, sugar, and salt. Our vision is to enhance its beauty while modernising its infrastructure, shaping a brighter, more prosperous future for this iconic location.”

Under the terms of this agreement, SMP, Kolkata will extend its unwavering support by providing unfettered access and essential utilities, including electricity, water and robust security, to ensure the seamless execution of the project. Upon its glorious completion, the revitalised Ghat will be entrusted to SMPK for its enduring stewardship and meticulous maintenance. Furthermore, SMP, Kolkata will graciously facilitate all requisite statutory clearances and provisions for comprehensive drainage.

This collaboration stands as a luminous beacon, brilliantly illustrating the revolutionary impact of public-private partnerships in safeguarding our invaluable urban heritage and reimagining our public spaces for the betterment of all. It also underscores SMP, Kolkata's intention to sustainable development and creation of inclusive infrastructure, poised to elevate the aesthetic allure of the area and foster a vibrant spirit of community engagement and tourism.
