As heavy rains lashed Bhilai for three consecutive days in early July, what could have spelt chaos for urban life turned into a lesson in preparedness, with the proactive planning and swift response of the Town Services Department of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant.

Between July 1 and 3, the township witnessed an intense spell of rainfall, recording more than 5.3 cm of precipitation in a short duration. Localities such as Sectors 4, 6, 2, and others faced significant waterlogging situations. However, the severity of the situation was mitigated by pre-monsoon preparatory operations, systematic repair of drains, and coordinated water flow management, all undertaken in advance under the annual monsoon preparedness initiative.

Despite these comprehensive efforts, the incessant rainfall, combined with a three-hour deluge in a single day, created isolated challenges. Some locations experienced drainage obstruction not due to natural causes alone but also because of encroachments and negligent civic practices. Unauthorised constructions by residents on drainage lines severely impaired the flow of rainwater. In Sector-6’s market area, leftover debris from recent construction along the drains and waste materials, such as from a temple, further compounded the blockage. Similarly, in Sector-10, drains were choked due to haphazardly laid utility cables and improperly fixed paver blocks in the rear lanes of residential zones, creating conditions ripe for flooding.
Yet, under the Town Services Department, the Disaster Management Team acted with remarkable agility. With the deployment of four JCB machines and a dedicated workforce of 10–15 personnel, the team cleared obstructions in affected areas. Within 4–5 hours, waterlogging was brought under control, restoring normalcy across the township.

These efforts are not a one-time response but part of a continuous campaign. Ongoing drain cleaning operations are underway to ensure that such contingencies are prevented in future. Additionally, the department has issued strict advisories to township residents, warning against any form of illegal construction over drains. The message is clear: cooperation is vital to maintain civic order and ensure that no disruption hampers the lives of residents.
Residents across Bhilai have acknowledged and appreciated the commitment of the Town Services Department. What could have become a crisis transformed into a reflection of resilience and coordination. The Department’s Disaster Management Team did not just manage the rains, they upheld a legacy of service and vigilance.
